Many praise Canada for its excellent benefits, but dental coverage is not included in provincial healthcare plans. Without an extended company insurance plan, Canadians often face hefty out-of-pocket costs for dental treatments like cleanings and fillings. Finally, the eagerly awaited Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) provides universal dental subsidies for all age groups. However, some online articles have misinterpreted this plan. Here, I will provide a detailed analysis.

Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Overview

The CDCP, starting in May 2024, is a publicly funded dental benefit aimed at families with an annual income below $90,000 who lack private dental insurance.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Canadian tax residents (PR, citizens, students, work permit holders)

• No other dental insurance

• Family net income below $90,000

• Filed taxes for the previous year

Reimbursement Details:

• Families with a net income up to $70,000: 100% reimbursement

• Income between $70,000 - $80,000: 60% reimbursement

• Income between $80,000 - $90,000: 40% reimbursement

Note that the plan has reimbursement limits based on the CDCP fee schedule. If your dentist charges more than the reference rates, you'll need to pay the difference.

How to Apply

Prepare your SIN, birth date, name, mailing address, and last year's NOA, then apply online.

After applying, Health Canada will verify your eligibility and share your information with Sun Life to enroll you in the plan. Within three months, you'll receive a welcome package from Sun Life, including:

• Coverage start date

• Membership card

• Information about the CDCP

Covered Services

• Preventive services: cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments

• Diagnostic services: X-rays

• Restorative services: fillings

Subsidies do not cover crowns, teeth whitening, or fixed bridges.

Before treatment, confirm with your dental clinic whether they can directly bill Sun Life or if you need to pay any additional costs. Avoid paying out-of-pocket and expecting reimbursement without checking first.
